VH1 has capitalized off of Black People

Many think of Flavor Flav as an idiot. But, Flav has done more is a six year span than most TV executives do in a lifetime. e turned a struggling TV network into a ratings powerhouse.

His shows sparked a black reality show revolution on VH1. Flavor Flav’s “Flavor of Love series spawned “I Love Network.” The series starred Tiffany “New York” Pollard. Tiffany PollardShe later went on to have her own franchise of shows. Pollard starred in such VH1 reality shows as “New York goes to Hollywood” and “New York goes to Work.”

Because of her funky attitude and her breast implants, Pollard was a favorite among viewers. Both of her shows brought in high ratings for the network.

Her “I Love New York” series opened the door for “Real Chance of Love,” starring brothers Real and Chance (Ahmad and Kamal Givens).

Real & Chance IIReal and Chance were real-life brothers who competed for the heart of New York and went on to have their own dating show.

The brothers brought charisma and energy that was only matched by Flavor Flav. This was something that VH1! had lacked in their post Flavor Flav era.

“Real Chance of Love” was another ratings success and it will be returning for a second season on August 3, 2009.

Aside from the dating shows, former popular rap duo, Salt-N-PepaThe Salt-N-Pepa Show had their own VH1 show that lasted for two seasons and will return later this year.

Gotti's WayIn addition, VH1 also granted former high-demand hip hop producer, Irv Gotti a reality show.

His series, “Gotti’s Way,” is another show that has a sizable audience. The second season finale just aired on June 23. Another season is expected later this year, or sometime next year.

VH1 has also brought in ratings with such shows as “For the Love of Ray J,” which stars R&B singer, Ray J, as he looks for love. This show will also be returning for a second season.

Terrell Owens IIRecently, NFL star, Terrell Owens, has been the star of his own show, “The T.O. Show.” The series has been another hit series for VH1 that stars a black person. Aside from that, Terrell Owens has become the face of the network.

“Charm School has been a success, due to having mostly black women on their show each season. During the first season, Mo’Nique hosted the show and it featured girls from “Flavor of Love.” The second season featured Sharon Osbourne as host and featured girls from “Rock of Love.” While the show was still successful, ratings were not as good as the first season. The third season was hosted by Ricki Lake and had girls from both “Rock of Love” and “Real Chance of Love.” VH1 used race relations to help boost the show’s ratings.

RiskyRecent “Charm School” winner, Ebony Jones, better known as Risky, is being set up for her own VH1 series. Her attitude and her personality makes her the perfect candidate for her own reality show.

“Flavor of Love 3″’s Prancer has recently appeared in some commercials and she has expressed interest in having her own show. She may have one coming soon.

While VH1 would have still had some success with “The Surreal Life,” without having the people that they have now, the network would not be half as popular as it is now. Without the black people that VH1 put on their programs, the network would not be able to maintain the ratings that they get.
